How to find us

You’ll find us in the world-famous Royal William Yard, a former navy victualling yard built where the River Tamar flows into Plymouth Sound.
Constructed between 1825 and 1831, the Royal William Yard is steeped in naval history and considered one of the most important groups of historic military buildings in Britain and the most extensive collection of Grade 1 Listed military buildings in Europe.

We’re in the Factory Cooperage, a group of buildings built to support the enormous demands on the supply of barrels for the store on board royal navy ships.

The lower floor was used to store sponges, rammers, and carriages (all used in naval artillery warfare), while the first floor was used for the armour, containing some 9,000 rifles, pistols, cutlasses, boarding pikes, machine guns and other quick-firing weapons.

But there’s nothing so deadly in the buildings now – just all the equipment you need to bring peace and creativity to your life.

Look out for the red telephone box outside our building!

Ocean Studios is a space where a whole range of makers including artists, printmakers, fashion and graphic designers, craftspeople, potters, jewelery makers and students all work together to make Plymouth a great place to visit – and a great place to make art and crafts.

Accessibility

Ocean Studios has an accessible entrance; however, some areas are uneven due to heritage restrictions. We have worked hard to create an accessible building. Ocean Studios has accessible toilet facilities and lift access to the upper floors. Blue badge parking is available throughout the Royal William Yard – please advise us of any additional needs so we can make your visit enjoyable and comfortable.

Heritage Restrictions

Whilst we work to ensure the building is fully accessible to all, we are limited by the heritage building and land in which we operate. Unfortunately, the listed building and historic location have certain constraints that we cannot avoid or adapt.

Where possible, we have improved accessibility; however, please be aware that areas of Royal William Yard and our buildings have uneven ground and narrow steps, which may limit access to wheelchairs and prams. For further information, don’t hesitate to contact us, or whilst visiting Ocean Studios, please speak to a staff member.
